Močvara Gallery // Jojo Gronostay: Dead White Men's Clothes

The origin of the word DWMC lies in the Ghanaian expression "Obroni Wawu", which can be translated as "dead white men’s clothes".

When the first waves of second-hand clothes arrived in Ghana from the global north in the 1970s, the locals could not believe that such high-quality clothing could just be given away for free, so they assumed that the previous owner had died. Since 2017, Jojo Gronostay has been buying used clothes at the Kantamanto Market in Accra, the world's largest second-hand clothes market, and re-introducing them to the Western fashion and art world.
