Residency snippets – Sanja Bistričić Srića

As part of the Solitude Exchange Network 2025 artist-in-residence program, multimedia artist, photographer and videographer Sanja Bistričić Srića will be in Stuttgart from September to the end of November 2025.

Through her artistic practice, which often tackles personal themes, Sanja Bistričić Srića collages and deconstructs sound, text and image, using film, video and photographic media, as well as installation forms. After almost two months of her stay at Akademie Schloss Solitude, the artist shares her experience of the residency through personal impressions and photographs.

Coming to Akademie Schloss Solitude was filled with deep gratitude – for the opportunity and the time I have to be alone, to reflect and create.

Having time to dedicate to yourself and your work, without pressure, is a true privilege.

There are currently around thirty residents at the Academy who come from different countries and work in various fields – visual artists, sound artists, researchers, curators, performers, writers, etc. Everyone is kind, as is the staff who try to make us feel comfortable. I have met wonderful artists from different parts of the world. I think the residency is a perfect opportunity to exchange ideas, make new friends, and maybe even an opportunity for some new collaborations in the future.

Days go by very fast. There are days when I am completely alone, dedicated only to my work, and there are days that are very intense, filled with various activities: workshops, visiting exhibitions, presentations, and socializing.

My work routine is a combination of going to Atelier 15 (a shared studio used by multiple artists and where you can do whatever you want) and my own studio.

I think Atelier 15 is the space I love the most, as is the cafeteria – a place where we all gather at lunchtime or for coffee, talk and exchange experiences.

And the most beautiful thing here is the beautiful forest that surrounds us.

I'm currently working on the topic of collective memory, experimenting and testing different materials and approaches in working with photography, video and sound.ž

Akademie Schloss Solitude is an international residency program that has supported around 1,700 young artists from more than 120 countries since its establishment in 1990. It creates a closely-knit, global and transdisciplinary network of Solitude alumni that expands year after year.

Solitude Exchange Network is a new name of the Eastern European Network that the Akademie Schloss Solitude began to develop in 2002, in which Croatia has participated through the partnership with Pogon since 2009. Candidates who earn a residency in Stuttgart are selected through a public call once a year. The Residency Council established by Pogon selects three shortlisted candidates on the basis of submitted applications. The final selection is done by the Akademie Schloss Solitude, and 2025 fellow is Sanja Bistričić Srića.
